Cherub, Season Two - in the beginning
CHERUB Season One is nearly finished - what next, you may ask? Good question. We ourselves have barely decided what will happen next.
A few weeks ago, we invited a number of local (Seattle-based) writers to help contribute to a possible Season Two of CHERUB, the vampire with bunny slippers. For those who don't know, Season One was all shot in one fell swoop, across two solid weekends last November, and edited in a "just-in-time" fashion by our fantastic bicoastal team of Ben in Seattle and Kat in NYC. I wrote all the episodes of Season One. I thought it would be easier to just demonstrate the setting and the characters and then shoot the first season than try to explain it to possible writers without anything to point to as reference. But as we started considering Season Two, I wanted to get a few more voices involved, so we invited a number of local writers, including writers in the cast, to get involved. We had a drunken meeting where we plotted out the major beats of Season Two and then ran off to our cubby-holes to make with the goofy.
We just had our deadline for first draft submissions; we're going to collect feedback on these widely varied submissions and then ask for more drafts. We're working toward an early May read-through with the cast and crew, and then, well, we'll see what happens. This type of silliness is not necessarily that easy to generate. I've been telling people that I'm holding all the writers up to the extreme standards of mediocrity that I set during the first season. We'll see how that works out.
